Charts
Any query result can be visualized as a chart. Switch between Table and Chart view using the toggle at the top of the results panel.
Chart types
Three chart types are available:
- Bar — best for comparing categories or discrete values
- Line — best for trends over time
- Area — like line, but with gradient fills beneath the curve
Select the chart type from the type picker in the chart toolbar.
Configuring axes
- X column — the column used for the horizontal axis (auto-defaults to the first date column, if one exists)
- Y columns — one or more numeric columns to plot (multi-select). The first numeric column is selected by default.
- Group By — an optional categorical column that splits the data into series (e.g., group by location to see one line per location)
- X label / Y label — optional display names for the axes. Useful for giving context to custom SQL results (e.g., labeling the Y axis "Revenue ($)" instead of the raw column name).
Stacking and percent view
The Stack and % buttons are always visible in the chart toolbar:
- Stack — stacks series on top of each other instead of side-by-side (bar) or overlapping (area). Disabled when there's only one series or the chart type is Line.
- % view — normalizes stacked values to 100%, showing relative proportions instead of absolute values. Requires Stack to be active.
Switching to a Line chart automatically turns off both Stack and %.
Inline labels
For multi-series Line and Area charts, a tag icon in the toolbar toggles inline labels — series names rendered directly on the chart at the end of each line. This reduces the need to cross-reference the legend, especially with many overlapping series. Labels nudge apart automatically to avoid overlap.
Series colors
Each data series gets an automatic color from ProofPod's palette. To customize a series color, click the color swatch next to the series name in the chart legend — a hex color picker appears. Custom colors are saved when you save the chart as a Look.
Resizing
Drag the grip handle at the bottom-right corner of any chart to resize its height. This is useful when you have many series or want more vertical space for detail. The chart smoothly resizes as you drag (min 150px, max 800px).
Visual style
Charts adapt to your current theme (dark or light mode):
- Gradient fills that fade to transparent (not solid blocks)
- 2px neon strokes for line and area charts
- Tooltips with exact values on hover
- Dotted grid lines at low opacity
Smart defaults
When you switch to chart view, ProofPod auto-configures sensible defaults:
- First date column becomes the X axis
- First numeric column becomes the Y axis
- Chart type defaults to Bar
You can override any of these by changing the dropdowns in the chart toolbar.
Chart configuration — including axis labels, series colors, and chart height — is not saved automatically. To preserve your setup, save it as a Look.
